The Best Car Polishers/Buffers Buying Guide

Power polishing and buffing devices should possess the following features:

Spin Style

There are two main types of spin, rotary and orbital. If you are a professional choose rotary buffer. If you are a beginner choose an orbital buffer. See more details below in this post.

Size

Generally, buffing machines range in size from 1 to 10 inches, with the larger versions covering a larger area. However, smaller models can also be just as effective at getting rid of swirl marks and can also reach hard-to-reach spots.

Motor

The speed of these devices is usually measured in either RPM (revolutions per minute) or OPM (orbits per minute). Powerful motors may reduce user fatigue and speed up tasks, but we find that even a lower AMP motor can achieve a more thorough, longer-lasting finish, bringing paint to life. In addition, variable speed control helps save energy and extend the life of the tool.

Speed

Speed is a factor of how well the car buffer targets deep scratches. On the other hand, too much speed can cause friction and heat. We recommend 2,000 to 4,000 RPM.

Comfort & Hand Control

A vehicle polish is likely to take a while, so comfort is an important consideration. If possible, look for a machine with two handles that are adjustable.

It is also important to have soft grips made of rubber, so both your hands and your vehicle are safe. Additionally, the more comfortable and customizable your grip is, the more accurate you will be.

Weight

To operate it, you’ll need a machine that is lightweight and easy to maneuver.

Accessories

Additionally, it is important to consider the accessories that come with the tool, such as polishing pads or polishing bonnets, and determine if they are suitable for your needs.

Polishing bonnets are best for applying wax, while foam pads are best for the final stage of your polish project to bring out the shine.

A soft pad such as a foam pad or similar product will not be sufficient to remove scratches, as you would need something slightly rougher, like a wool pad.

Warranty

A great manufacturer’s warranty is very important to us. Any unforeseen problems will be covered by the company’s guarantee. Choose a car buffer that has at least a one-year warranty.

Other Considerations

You can also choose between cordless and corded models along with the size and power options.

Many good car buffers can be purchased for less than $50, provide a user-friendly experience, and provide optimal shine. However, you’ll need to spend between $150-$250 for professional-grade power tools

Difference Between Car Polisher and Buffer

Buffers and car polishers are the same. Polishing and buffing differ primarily in their techniques. There is a thin difference between these two techniques, not in the machines.

Types of Car Polishers/Buffers

There are two types of car polishers:

1. Variable Speed Rotary Polishers

Rotary car buffers and polishers spin around a single axis or clockwise direction. Most professionals use rotary-style buffer for both buffing and polishing. It won’t orbit, oscillate, or vibrate.

Rotary polishers have the most power and buffing ability. They are faster and more powerful than orbital buffers. As a result, it can quickly remove stains and scratches. Learning how to use it takes more time and practice compared to an orbital polisher.

One downside is the machine needs to be moved constantly while working, otherwise, concentrated spinning in one spot for a long time can damage the clear coat.

We won’t recommend Rotary polisher for beginners. Consider a rotary-style buffer only if you are an expert with polishers and detailing cars.

2. Dual-Action Orbital Polishers

These buffers are also known as random orbital or dual action buffers since they spin the pads in two directions. The pads rotate and oscillate back and forth. The buffing pad spins like a rotary style, but it also vibrates, orbits, or oscillates.

This type of car polisher oscillates many times per second. During the job, you can stop or slow down the pad. This will cause less paint damage.

Your car’s original paint is never damaged when you use orbital polishers. Generally, orbital polishers and buffers cover a larger area than rotary buffers. The orbital buffer is ideal for beginners as they are less powerful than the rotary buffer.

In most cases, orbital polishers are used to remove wax. In addition, the advanced motion of the pad has helped remove severe defects from the car’s body.

There are three types of orbital buffers

  1. Fixed Orbital
  2. Dual-Action Random Orbital
  3. Dual-Action Forced Rotation

Each type rotates and orbits differently. The best tool for beginners will be a dual-action random orbital since it poses the least risk of damaging the paint.
