How to Get the Best PC VR Gaming Setup

7 Tips on How to Get the Best PC VR Gaming Setup: Virtual Desktop has to be one of the most liberating apps available on the Oculus Quest headset as it allows you to keep the freedom of your oculus quest headset but play pc VR games at the same time. So you’re getting the best of both worlds!

However, optimizing this setup so that you get the best visual graphics available and the lowest latency can be a little bit tricky. So we’re going to take you through all the tips and tricks needed to get the best graphics and the lowest latency out of your setup.

Getting the best out of Virtual Desktop so that it’s operating at its best, with the best graphical settings and the lowest latency, can be tricky. So here are some of our handy tips to teach you How to Get the Best Setup for Wireless Pc Vr Gaming.

What Is Virtual Desktop?

The virtual desktop is a computer program or application that displays the user’s computer screen in a three-dimensional (3D) virtual space for use with a virtual reality headset. CNET and Polygon both told that the virtual desktop software was essential for virtual reality headsets users when it was released.

7 Tips on How to Get the Best PC VR Gaming Setup

1. 5GHz Wireless Router (Wifi 6)

First up make sure that your wi-fi connection is on a 5GHz network, preferably a wi-fi 6 router. Next, make sure that your pc is connected to your router through an ethernet cable, not wirelessly.

You want as much bandwidth through the wireless network to be dedicated to streaming the game to the quest and not having to bother about streaming to the pc as well, and it also will give you the lowest latency you can because it’s only got to worry about one wireless transmission.

2. Keep A Strong Wifi Signal

Next, play as close as you can to the wi-fi router. Now we’re not talking about playing right next to it, but you don’t want to be one end of the house if your router is the other end of it. Latency is the killer here of any wi-fi gaming.

3. Charge Your Batteries

Next up is making sure that the quest battery is fully charged because when you start playing in pc VR games, the games tend to be more engaging and you will find yourself playing for longer, and nothing is more frustrating than running out of battery halfway through a level. It might be an idea to invest in an external battery for the quest so that you can play for longer.

4. Pick Your Codec

You can reduce the latency by trying different codecs in the VR streamer app on the pc. By default, it’s set to automatic. There are two versions. There’s HEVC and H264. It is worth playing around with those to see which is better for you.

For us, H264 gave a latency about five milliseconds quicker than using HEVC, so it gives you a pretty big gain just by switching those around.

5. Turn Off Overlays

They do recommend that if you’ve got an Nvidia graphics card if you’re running the Nvidia experience, that you turn the Nvidia overlay off. So you can find out if you’ve got that by going into the Nvidia experience app, and the settings, and you’ll see where the overlay toggle is turned on or off. So turn that off if latency or maybe stuttering in the game is an issue for you.

6. Change Bitrates and Frame Rates

Now inside the virtual desktop app on the quest itself, there are settings in there where you can up the bit rate, and you can reduce the frame rate, on the quest as well and you can fiddle with those graphical settings to get the best one for you.

Now a lot of that is going to depend on your pc and your network and other factors so we would say have a bit of a play. By default, leave it alone. If you find that clarity is a problem then maybe increase the graphics.

If latency is a problem then maybe decrease some of those settings. Have a play and tweak it and you will get the best setup for yourself.

7. Check Your Pc For Conflicting Apps

If you are still getting latency issues or stuttering in your game it is worth checking your pc to see if other apps are running that might be causing issues. Anti-viruses are normally the main culprit here, so if you do have one running it might be worth turning it off whilst you’re playing a VR game.
